The parish lost a faithful friend on the 4th November with the death of Elaine Graham.
Since her retirement from the mission field in 1994, she has been a stalwart member of the parish staff, as a Lay Reader and an indefatigable leader of Bible studies. She was one of the first female Lay Readers in the Diocese one of the "Bishop's girls", and the parish was very proud of her. When women at the altar were rare, to see her in her robes of office, was a pleasure and encouragement to many.
Elaine worked for over forty years with Interserve, an interdenominational missionary society in Asia and the Middle East. Her service included 22 years working with the society in India and Pakistan. After studying at Redcliff Bible College in London, in 1955 she went to Lahore as librarian to Kinnaird College for Women, and later, for 10 years as Secretary to the Principal of Kinnaird High School.
In 1969 she was appointed a church worker by the Church of Pakistan, serving in St Andrew's, an Anglo-Pakistani parish in Lahore, and in1978, she returned to Ireland to become the Director of Interserve in the Republic. She continued in that post until her retirement. Apart from her parish work, she was President of the YWCA here until a few years ago and wrote a history of YWCA in Ireland.
Elaine, a daughter of Chancellor Malcolm Graham, grew up in the Rectory at Castlecomer, Co.Kilkenny and was educated at the Hall School in Monkstown. She has been in poor health for the last year. Her friends, neighbours in Glencormac, and family, will miss her.
