News from the Pews 10

It’s hard to believe that on 1st March it is a full year since myself and the family arrived in the United Parishes of Powerscourt with Kilbride and I unlocked the vestry door for the first 8:30am service in Powerscourt.  These past 12 months have been a busy time with much to learn and remember and there have been challenges with this of various shapes and sizes.  I want to thank you for your patience with the changes that will naturally occur these days and for the continuous warmth of welcome received by all of us here in the Rectory.  The other side of this is that I feel as if I am really beginning to get to know people now.  I am aware that, in all of the information given and routines to be established and maintained over the past year and, taking into account that we are three priests down to one, I may not have got to visit everyone in the parish as yet.  I would use this opportunity to ask that, if you would like a visit please call or drop me a text and I will be sure to come and see you.

Being not only pastor here but Chairperson of the Board of Management in the School gives a unique and more holistic view of the Parish and exciting plans are already in place for this coming year which will deliberately strengthen links between the Parish and School.  We have incredible groups of people in both of our churches and our school and I sincerely encourage you to come together and take part in the various events and gatherings in the coming year.  Our sincere thanks again to you all.

MUSIC AND SINGING GROUP

Hi everyone!  We are looking to put together a fun singing group for the family services.  We hope to get a small band with us, and this is already coming together.

We hope to sing fun up-beat songs that the children and adults can learn together and join in.  As many of you have children, they are welcome to join in too. We are aiming to have our first service on Sun 9th February’s Family Service, and we will come together in advance to learn the songs.  If you would like to join in or play an instrument, we would love to hear from you – Please contact Edwina Allman on 086 342 8118

PARISH WEBSITE

We are currently putting the final touches to a new Parish website.

All of the information from the old website, that is still relevant will be transferred across, but we welcome new submissions.  We especially welcome photographs for our gallery.

We are also appealing for a photograph of our beautiful St. Brigit’s Church, Kilbride, that we could use with permission for the website.  If anyone has a photo from the archives or just has taken a particularly nice photo, we would be delighted to hear from you.

SIZZLE SERVICE

We will be holding a Sizzle Service, this Sunday 26th January at 5.30 pm in St. Patricks Church, Powerscourt.  This is a fun and informal service for children and after there will be sausages served in Powerscourt National School.  All are very welcome.

CALLING ALL BAKERS!

St. Patricks Church will be hosting this year’s Confirmation service for Powerscourt, Kilbride and Kilternan Parishes.  We are calling any bakers who would like to bake a tray bake or cake for us to be served after the service on Saturday 22nd February.  Any volunteers to help with Tea and Coffee are very welcome too.  Please let Mandy know if you can help in anyway.

KILBRIDE NEWS

The organ in Kilbride Church underwent a major overhaul in the past few weeks and thankfully everything was back in order again for the service last Sunday.   Major work was undertaken as a result of rain damage.   The organ pipes have now been covered with a heavy-duty cover to minimise the risk of this happening again.

Kilbride Vestry meets on Wednesday 29th January at 8p.m. in the Parish Room – the Register of Vestry members will be updated at this meeting.   If you are not on the list and wish to be registered, please speak to either of the churchwardens.

Contributions to the “Flower Fund” towards the cost of flowers in the chancel are always welcome.   Contact either Jacinta or Georgina re same.

We continue to remember those parishioners who are sick at home or in Hospital at this time.

This has been a rather bad start to the new year,  as quite a few were out of sorts since the start of the month, as a  result on our first meet we decided  to go over to Kingfishers for our tea as there were so few of us, , then unfortunately due family death we cancelled the next Friday  so now we are just hoping nothing else goes amiss so we can meet on our usual Friday time  2. 30 till 4. 30, do come and join us any Friday.

Just remember to keep warm and don’t forget if you feel like a chat and can’t get out, you can just call either Ann at 2862330 or Marjorie at 2863499 any time.

Did anyone notice the snow drops are up and even a few stems of daffodils are beginning to appear, a very welcome sign for the new year. Let’s just hope we don’t get snow to spoil it.

With spring in the air, it is time many young people think of getting wed, and don’t forget it is a leap year.  So, we remind you if you are planning the big day, We are open for orders for the wedding flowers and we can supply the red carpet which enhances the church.

Sunday flowers in February will be by Mrs. Mold on 2nd & 16th.

We will hold the February Dinner on, 29th February and not as previously planned on the 15th, as our first date clashes with a fund raiser to be held in Summerhill hotel on that night.  We have started taking bookings already, so do book soon to avoid dismay.  This promises to be even better than our last night as Richard has something spectacular in mind for you and the food will be great and at only €20 each is great value for a night out.     If you would like to text us at 087 647 2668.

News from the Pews 9

Note from Rev. Cathy

My Father always loved this time of year when an extra tiny stretch of extended light is visible every evening ‘the size of the stretch of a cockerel’s foot’ he would say. Each new year and new light allowed him to be out in his garden ever longer each evening, pottering about in the dusk. For Dad, God was outside and, in the turn, and scent of the soil and the propagation of new shoots and bulbs. For him, the ‘Cockerel’s foot’ stretch of light every day spoke of warmer, longer days to come and was filled with the same resilient hope that my Father possessed.  As a result, I welcome the Cockerel’s Foot Stretch every year and remind my family of this, so that they too can glance upward with full appreciation of the hope that light brings. After all, we are children of the light.

In this new Season of Epiphany, the same light of Christ we celebrated during some of the darkest days in December is now celebrated in the light of understanding and recognition that the child in Bethlehem was the long-promised Messiah and God in human form.  This, of course, was not a once-off event but is a continuous revelation of Christ as ever-present in our lives. As an exercise for the Season of the Epiphany, I decided to look at the moments in my life (the ‘epiphanies’) that revealed God’s presence right here and right now.  What were or are the moments in your life where you have seen God in others or in circumstances or events? Are you able to find him in both the joys and the sorrows in equal measure? What are the happenings to which your heart was clear in its response that there is far more to this than we can see or understand?

As the light continues to grow, I wish you and those you love an ever-increasing Epiphany of the presence of Christ in your life, through all and ever-changing circumstances.

Happy New Year Everyone!  May God bless you and bring you great joy, peace and health in 2020.

CONFIRMATION GROUP 2020
It is a great pleasure to be working with our group of confirmation candidates for this year. The Confirmation will take place in St. Patrick’s Church, Powerscourt on Saturday 22nd February next and you will notice our candidates at the church services and around the parish in the weeks to follow.

As part of the development of this group, we wanted them to take part in outreach programmes in order to see the ministry of Christ in action in our own lives. We are delighted to announce that one such project of outreach took place after the Carols by Candlelight Service before Christmas where the candidates provided tray-bakes in aid of Five Loaves charity. Thank you to all who supported them and to the candidates themselves.

The Confirmation date is very early for us this year and is almost upon us! Please remember these young people in your prayers and engage with them on Sundays as they are wonderful representatives of the future of church!

News from the Pews 8

From the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry, his focus on the need for community was apparent in how he dismantled borders and drew people from the fringes of society into a new understanding of the love and acceptance of a God who was far greater than we sometimes give him credit for. Christ’s command to come together in remembrance of him and in his name, lives on in the acts of community in this place and I thank you all, because never in my life have I been so acutely aware that Church is far wider than our beautiful buildings and liturgies.  It is in the neatly set flowers beside the communion table; the quiet unmentioned cleaning of gutters; it’s in the cooking for groups and showing up Sunday after Sunday to set out hymnals; the creativity of stalls and costumes to re-tell a story; and yes, the sparkling laneways and voices raised in carol singing.  And this is only the tip of the iceberg! Here is a clear view of church in action within the lives of individuals and groups of people. Here too, the clear witness of depth of tradition and community in these wide-open spaces and an exciting glimpse of the future of church both inside and outside its walls.

On behalf of my family, I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and peaceful, healthy and joyous New Year.  Thank you again for the support given and friendships built over these past 8 months. We look forward to sharing the future with you!

God bless you all and keep you safe in his love.  Amen.

Cathy

We will prepare the church for Christmas on Saturday 21st starting at 10am so if you would like to come and along you will be most welcome

A new flower list will be prepared in the coming months and if anyone would like to have memorial flowers on any Sunday, we will be delighted to hear from you, it usually takes about 3 or 4 bunches of flowers and some greens.  We can prepare them for you or if you prefer it you may like to arrange them yourself.

Also, if there are any bride and grooms out there who would like us to prepare wedding flowers, we will be delighted to hear from you.  We supply our own greenery and buy in the flowers and as our work is voluntary, we can offer a very low price and still make a little profit which we save in our fund till we have enough to do something useful round the church.  We have used all our income to finance things like the new cushions on the pews and the Lytch gate which makes a good focal point to join the car park with the church grounds.
